Raise the Titanic

The movie Raise the Titanic is based off the novel written by Clive Cussler, Raise the Titanic!  The novel Raise the Titanic, was based off the R.M.S. ship being raised to obtain a supply of rare mineral.  The movie was inspired by this plot and was essentially based off novel.  The 1980 film by Lew Grade’s ITC Entertainment was directed by Jerry Jameson.  The screenplay was written by Adam Kennedy and Eric Hughes.  The film casts consists of Jason Robards, Richard Jordan, David Shelby, Anne Archer and Alec Guiness.

In the film a group of Americans who have experience in raising small ships from the sea bed are hired to raise the famous ocean liner Titanic form the North Atlantic to obtain rare mineral from the ship. 

The crew won custody over the Greek ship Athinai to film their shot.  The film spent 250,000 turning the liner Athinai into the raised Titanic.  Filming on the ship Athinai  lasted for about four days.  The movie production paid 2,000 per hour for tugs to move the ship Athinai.

The RTT grand staircase was filmed in Athinai’s dining saloon.  A model of the grand staircase was suspended in front of the camera.

Over 3.5 million dollars in equipment was donated by the U.S. and Japanese companies for the film’s production.  With the help of the Maltese government land was purchased adjacent from the smaller tank to help with the ocean scenes.  A 39 feet turnabout represents the ocean floor the Titanic rests at the set of Raise the Titanic.  It took about 10 hours to fill the 9 million gallon tank.  

Overall he film was not received well by critics.  The estimated budget for the film was about 35 million.  There was only a total of about 13.8 million received from box office revenue and movie rentals.  There was a huge budget deficit.  The movie was said to be a disaster by many critics and was said to have not accurately portrayed the fatality of the R.M.S. ship Titanic.
